The Honeys by Ryan LaSala Book Review

The Honeys by Ryan LaSala is a YA paranormal fiction novel. It was published in 2022 by PUSH. It has 3.85 stars on Goodreads. Here are my thoughts.
The Honeys is about a genderfluid teenager named Mars Matthias. He and his twin sister, Caroline, attended a prestigious summer camp called Aspen Conservancy Camp. After he stopped attending, he and his sister grew apart. She devoted her attention to her new friends at camp, a cult-like group of girls called the Honeys. After Caroline dies in a disturbing accident, Mars goes back to Aspen to investigate. He loses sight of his true intentions as he reluctantly participates in camp traditions and gets involved with the Honeys. What he eventually finds is much more complicated than he ever imagined.
The plot of The Honeys is immersing. It isn’t necessarily realistic, but as I was reading it seemed logical in a terrifying way.
The main characters in The Honeys are Mars, Wyatt, and Bria. The character development in this book is pivotal. Mars becoming comfortable in his identity gives him confidence that changes his life direction. Wyatt learns to question the conservative norms of his family and community. Bria isn’t as dominant of a character, but she stands up to the rest of the Honeys for what she knows is right. These characters are especially relatable to modern teenagers who are navigating the complexities of identity.
The writing of The Honeys is fantastic. It pulled me into the sickly sweet world of Aspen Conservancy Camp. The dialogue was real and hilarious, lightening the mood of the book and keeping me interested.
In conclusion, I would give The Honeys by Ryan LaSala 4 stars. I liked the way the author portrays Mars’ feeling of belonging with the Honeys. I would have liked for more explanation of the hive mind and how it works. I recommend this book to readers looking for a book about family, identity, and/or the paranormal.
